From March 27 to May 10, 2020, the National Gallery in Cosenza will host works by the great Japanese masters of woodcut for the first time in Calabria. The exhibition Japan. Masters of the Orient. Woodcut Masterpieces of Japanese Art in fact exposes to the public masterpieces by great artists such as Katsushika Hokusai, Utagawa Hiroshige, Utagawa Kuniyoshi, and then again Kunisada, Hiroshige II, Chikanobu, Kyosai, Kunichika, Shuntei and others. One hundred works from private collections will be on display: from Hokusai’s Manga and Gafu to Hiroshige’s series of Fifty-three Stations of Tokaido, and also portraits of kabuki theater actors executed by Kunisada, Shuntei’s samurai, Hiroshige II’s Forty-eight famous views of Edo, and Kuniyoshi’s visionary panels.
In Cosenza, the public will also be able to see original antiquities from the Edo period (1603-1868). The exhibition, curated by Alessandro Mario Toscano and Marco Toscano, aims to be a journey through the art, traditions, history, landscapes, and myths of Japan. “A cultural operation,” reads a note, “that does not only want to make its audience feel more erudite, but also wants to offer the cues for a posthumous reflection: the observation and understanding ’of the other’ needs a plurality of gazes, our solopoint of view is not enough.”
Visiting Hours: Tuesday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6:30 p.m., Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. The ticket office closes 40 minutes earlier. Tickets: full 6 euros, reduced 5 euros (for Italobus ticket holders with destination Cosenza, Italian Touring Club members, FAI members, university students with valid ID, children from 6 years to 18 years, over 65, military and law enforcement, teachers of schools of all levels, pre-established groups of adults minimum 15 people), free for journalists with ID of the ’Order of Journalists, EU tour guides with ID, school chaperones (two per group), ICOM members, children under 6, disabled visitors with certification, chaperone of disabled visitor (only in case of non-self-sufficiency).
