Japanese landscapes on silk dresses: Fabio Truffa's exhibition at the Venice Museum of Oriental Art

From Nov. 19, 2022, to Jan. 8, 2023, the Museum of Oriental Art in Venice presents Fabio Truffa's paintings dedicated to Hiroshige's Japanese landscapes mounted on specially made silk shantung dresses.

The Museum of Oriental Art in Venice will present from November 19, 2022 to January 8, 2023 some silk paintings by San Remo artist Fabio Truffa on the occasion of the exhibition project Ashes of Reflection. The works by Fabio Truffa (San Remo, 1960) will be juxtaposed with prints by Utagawa Hiroshige, owned by the Museum and exhibited here.

Mounted on silk shantung dresses specially made by his brother Marco Truffa, Fabio’s paintings are dedicated to the Japanese artist’s landscapes. Not copying, but reinterpreting, revisiting through his personal experience. “Of this profound interpreter of the Japanese landscape,” Fabio Truffa explains, “I appreciated the ability to represent the mutability of the seasons.” It is precisely four seasons, inspired by four prints from the series Meisho Edo Hyakkei (One Hundred Famous Views of Edo), made by Hiroshige between 1856 and 1858, that are displayed in the Museum’s large hall, alongside the bound volume with the original prints. These are juxtaposed with two outfits paying homage to woodcuts created by Hiroshige in 1858 for the Fuji SanjÅ« rokkei (Thirty-six Views of Fuji) series. Also on display is a depiction of Tomoe Gozen, inspired by a print by Yoshitoshi, and a portrait of Hiroshige on a male kimono.

“The exhibition of Truffa’s works reveals an impassioned artistic and human journey,” says director Marta Boscolo Marchi, “and at the same time allows us to enhance the Museum’s collection of prints in comparison with the reading of a contemporary artist.”
