From March 24 to Sept. 9, Bologna’s Palazzo Albergati will host the exhibition “Japan. Stories of Love and War,” an exhibition that will feature Geisha and samurai, beautiful women and legendary heroes, kabuki actors, fantastic animals, visionary worlds and bizarre landscapes.
The exhibition will showcase a selection of more than 200 works to discover the elegant and refined atmosphere of the Edo period. The works on display belong to the greatest Japanese artists of the 19th century such as Hiroshige, Utamaro, Hokusai and Kuniyoshi, but there will also be space for samurai clothes, kimonos, fans and photographs to offer a comprehensive overview of life in Japan at the time as well.
The itinerary, developed through ten sections, winds its way through the persuasive female world of geisha and Åiran (the high-ranking courtesans) and the allure of legendary samurai warriors, the tale of the birth of ukiyo-e and the famous shunga prints rich in eroticism, the works depicting NÅ and Kabuki theater actors alongside those depicting the world of nature in all its manifestations-flowers, birds and landscapes.
Under the patronage of the City of Bologna, the Consulate General of Japan in Milan and the Italy Japan Foundation, the exhibition is produced and organized by Arthemisia Group and curated by Pietro Gobbi, a great scholar of Japanese art.
The exhibition is open daily from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (ticket office closes one hour earlier) including April 1, April 2, April 25, May 1, June 2 and Aug. 15. The ticket price (which includes an audiovisual guide) is €14 full price and €12 reduced price.
