Jacques-Louis David and Caravaggio compared at Palazzo Zevallos in Naples

Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano in Naples presents the exhibition-dossier David and Caravaggio from December 5, 2019 to April 19, 2020.

From December 5, 2019 to April 19, 2020, Palazzo Zevallos Stigliano in Naples offers the exhibition-dossier David and Caravaggio. The Cruelty of Nature, the Fragrance of the Ideal.

Starting with a very faithful copy, in the pontifical royal basilica of San Francesco di Paola in Naples, of Caravaggio ’s Deposition in the Sepulchre preserved in the Vatican Museums, the exhibition aims to illustrate the fortunes of this masterpiece at a time when Caravaggio was capturing the attention of French painters who were staying in Rome in the Neoclassical age for artistic training; among them, Jacques-Louis David.

The high-quality copy was made in 1824 by the Neapolitan painter Tommaso De Vivo, when Caravaggio’s original had returned to Rome, after being requisitioned to become part of the Musée Napoléon collections, and transferred to the Vatican collections.

The focus of the exhibition is a comparison of the Deposition in the Tomb and The Death of Marat that evokes this lesser-known moment in Caravaggio’s fortunes. Since it was not possible to exhibit the two original masterpieces, one of the four replicas of The Death of Marat made by the French master’s pupils in theatelier under his direction, namely the specimen kept at the Musée des Beaux-Art in Reims, has been placed next to the Neapolitan copy of The Deposition in the Sepulcher.

In addition to these, visitors can admire some masterpieces by David, a great protagonist of Neoclassicism, such as La Buona Ventura and Death of Seneca, and 19th-century volumes devoted to the Vatican collections.
