Jacques Henri Lartigue stars in an exhibition in Milan

Jacques Henri Lartigue's photos are featured in an exhibition at the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum in Milan, through Nov. 26.

Jacques Henri Lartigue (Courbevoie, 1894 - Nice, 1986), one of the most celebrated French photographers of the 20th century, is the protagonist of a small but international exhibition at the Bagatti Valsecchi Museum in Milan through Nov. 26. Jacques Henri Lartigue Photographer. Time Rediscovered, curated by Angela Madesani, displays thirty-three photographs that narrate the life of the French upper middle class from the Belle Époque years in Paris. Shots depicting Parisian life, the personalities of the time from Pablo Picasso to Jean Cocteau, car rides, and travel will be on display. Also on display will be original materials coming from the Jacques Henri Lartigue Donation, for an exhibition that is an interesting and rare opportunity to learn about and explore Lartigue’s research.

“The importance of Lartigue’s work,” reads the presentation of the exhibition, “is not only photographic in nature but more broadly cultural: his images offer a portrait of high society with an unmistakably French allure but also incredibly close to the rituals and customs of the international aristocracy, made their own by Bagatti Valsecchi himself, in the same years. The atmospheres are those of Proust’s Recherche: the beaches, the racetracks, the social gatherings. These are photos capable of arousing emotions, iconographic and other references to a world that has definitively disappeared.”

Hours to visit the exhibition: Tuesday through Sunday from 1 to 5:45 p.m. Closed Mondays and Nov. 1. Admission: full 9 euros, reduced 6 euros. There will be free guided tours included in the ticket price on Oct. 21, Nov. 4, Nov. 25, also at 4 p.m. Family activities on Oct. 14 and Nov. 18 (reservations at 02 76006132).
