From April 29, 2022 to January 8, 2023, the Palazzo dei Musei in Reggio Emilia will host the exhibition In scala diversa. Luigi Ghirri, Miniature Italy and New Perspectives, curated by Ilaria Campioli, Joan Fontcuberta and Matteo Guidi. The exhibition, on the occasion of the thirtieth anniversary of the death of Luigi Ghirri (Scandiano, 1943 - Reggio Emilia, 1992), brings together for the first time the photographs from the series In Scala made by Ghirri at Italia in miniatura, a well-known theme park located near Rimini that reproduces Italian landscape, monumental and architectural heritage to scale. From the late 1970s to the first half of the 1980s, the park was visited several times by Ghirri, as here he found many of the conceptual and aesthetic issues that interested him, such as illusion and trompe-l’oeil, the distance between reality and its representation, artificial nature, the consumption of touristic reality, the spectator’s gaze and his scopic voracity and, above all, the paradoxes of scale.
The exhibition displays photographs, also unpublished, from Ghirri’s series, for the first time in dialogue with a selection of materials from the park’s archives, collected and produced by Ivo Rambaldi in those same years as references for the construction of the models. In addition to maps, sketches, notes and other documents, there are photographs taken by Rambaldi while traveling around Italy.
Completing the exhibition are photographic projects made by a working group of emerging artists, based on the idea of Joan Fontcuberta and Matteo Guidi from a workshop at ISIA in Urbino: these join the homage to Ghirri.
The exhibition is organized in collaboration with Parco Italia in Miniatura | Archivio Eredi Luigi Ghirri | ISIA Urbino with Art bonus contributions from: IREN SpA | Fondazione Pietro Manodori and with the contribution of Crédit Agicole Italia.
