MAAB Gallery in Milan presents from June 18 to September 18, 2020 the exhibition Politics of Nature. Masters, curated by Massimiliano Scuderi.
Inspired by Bruno Latour’s book of the same name, the exhibition aims to relate the research of five international artists who have addressed the theme of a possible relationship of harmony between man and nature, between utopian vision and design proposal.
Latour in his book distinguishes the world into representations and values and compares rational and irrational, science and society, culture and nature.
The works in the exhibition aim to map a possible reconciliation between man and the environment, capturing both potential and critical aspects.
Peter Bartoš, an exponent of the new Slovak avant-garde, starts from painting to develop an aesthetic capable of modifying life. Between 1969 and 1979, when he became landscape designer of the Bratislava Zoo, he developed an experimental concept of ecological culture dealing not only with the selection and generation of animals (his research on pigeons is well known), but also with the land cultivated by humans in a combination of holism and avant-garde feeling.
Mark Dion builds with scientific accuracy true Wunderkammer full of semantic references, where cultural and natural elements recreate possible ecosystems.
Peter Fend draws inspiration from Leon Battista Alberti’s four books on architecture for the construction of a habitable and healthy environment, with tools he deduces from contemporary art history, from Duchamp to Beuys, from Oppenheim to Gordon Matta Clark and others.
Since 1968 Piero Gilardi has participated in and contributed to the most innovative artistic experiences such as Arte Povera and Land Art. Interested in inter-actual processes, he reconstructs the generative phenomena of equatorial typhoons in order to make his concept of art as political engagement and action understood.
Alexis Rockman depicts through refined painting futuristic visions that celebrate the survival instinct and adaptability of living beings. An iconography that originates from the sketchbooks he compiled with Mark Dion in the early 1990s during excursions to the tropics.
