Invisible Leonardo drawings on display for the first time at Queen's Gallery

In celebration of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci's death, invisible drawings by the artist will be on display at Queen's Gallery.

On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace, will exhibit to the public for the first time two sheets of paper that have been revealed to conceal hand studies drawn using a metallic substance that has become invisible over time.
These would be hand studies for the 1481Adoration of the Magi.

The exhibition promises to be the largest exhibition of Leonardo’s works in 65 years with more than 200 drawings visible to the public.

Leonardo’s drawings, brought together in a single album by sculptor Pompeo Leoni in Milan around 1590, became part of the Royal Collection during the reign of Charles II, and scholars over time had noticed that the paper had indentations on the surface.

It was not until the 20th century that the works were examined with the help of ultraviolet light, revealing those detailed hands to their amazement.
Now experts are focusing on why the images disappeared, the type of material used to draw them.
In the exhibition, alongside the two sheets of paper, there will be photographs of the image under ultraviolet rays revealing the said hands.

The retrospective"Leonardo da Vinci: A Life in Drawing" is scheduled for May 2019.

Also from February 2019, twelve selected works by Leonardo will be on display simultaneously in Belfast, Birmingham, Bristol, Cardiff, Glasgow, Leeds, Liverpool, Manchester, Sheffield, Southampton, and Sunderland.
