Until November 10, 2019, the Agostino Pepoli Regional Museum in Trapani is hosting the exhibition Portrait in the Twentieth Century. Masterpieces from the Civic Museums of Milan, curated by Anna Maria Montaldo and Evelina De Castro.
The exhibition brings together eleven masterpieces from the Museo del Novecento and GAM in Milan by great artists that tell the story of 20th-century portraiture: Boccioni, Modigliani, Marini, Balla, Picasso and many others initiate an ideal dialogue with Francesco Laurana and his Bust of Eleanor of Aragon, a masterpiece of the Sicilian museums.
The exhibition path kicks off with a comparison of two prefuturist works such as Giacomo Balla ’s 1902 Portrait of Nunzio Nasi and Umberto Boccioni’s melancholy 1907 Portrait of Mother. The Futurist beginnings of Mario Sironi, whose Futurist Head of 1913 is featured in the exhibition, and Amedeo Modigliani ’s experiments with the 1915 Portrait of Béatrice Hastings introduce the works of the “return to order,” such as Arturo Martini’s 1921 Bust of a Boy, Giorgio De Chirico’s 1935 Autunno (Autumn ), and Antonio Donghi’s famous 1936 Margherita, a symbol of Magic Realism.
Belonging to the interwar years are Fausto Pirandello ’s intense 1940 Self-Portrait and Corrado Cagli’s 1940 Portrait of Mrs. Sachs. The exhibition closes with Picasso’s 1967Homme assise (Le Fumeur).
The exhibition is a collaboration between institutions and museums of the Sicilian Region and the City of Milan.
