In Rome a major photo exhibition dedicated to film diva Gina Lollobrigida

More than 120 photographs celebrate Gina Lollobrigida in an exhibition at the Istituto Centrale per la Grafica in Rome until Oct. 8: It is titled 'Gina's Worlds' and is curated by Lucia Borgonzoni, undersecretary for culture, and Chiara Sbarigia, president of Cinecittà.

An exhibition of more than 120 photographs entirely dedicated to the myriad arts of the “eternal diva” Gina Lollobrigida, who was an actress as well as a talented photographer, designer, sculptor and even singer. Entitled I mondi di Gina (Gina’s Worlds ), the tribute to the life of this universal icon is illustrated by photos from theLuce-Cinecittà Archive, the Experimental Center of Cinematography and MuFoCo-Museum of Contemporary Photography-and other archives, as well as some of her fabulous Bulgari jewelry, dresses and stage costumes that went down in history with the Artist.

Conceived and curated by Ministry of Culture Undersecretary Lucia Borgonzoni and Cinecittà President Chiara Sbarigia, I mondi di Gina is a tribute to the eclectic talent of one of the greatest actresses in the history of Italian and international cinema. The Exhibition, created by Luce in the halls of Palazzo Poli, which overlooks the Trevi Fountain, is a journey tracing her entire life illustrated by photos from the Luce-Cinecittà Archive, the Experimental Center of Cinematography and MuFoCo - Museum of Contemporary Photography - and other archives.

“This exhibition wants to pay tribute to all ’Gina’s Worlds’: not only the actress, then, but also the photographer, the sculptor, the traveler,” says Undersecretary Borgonzoni, describing the intent of the initiative. “In short, a symbol of female emancipation and resourcefulness, a woman,” the senator continued, "who through art was able to reinvent herself by giving herself new lives, which allowed her to express herself in the round and to achieve in the figurative arts an artistic caliber unthinkable, at the time, for an international movie star: a feminist ante litteram.

“Her proud and eclectic personality make Gina Lollobrigida’s an exemplary figure precisely in the literal sense of the word, that is, worthy of being taken as an example,” says Cinecittà President Chiara Sbarigia, “Because Gina was first and foremost a self-made woman. A contemporary woman of many facets and inexhaustible creativity, who already at the height of her success in the 1960s, first in parallel and then leaving acting behind, resumed her artistic vein and turned to photography, receiving many awards and honors. But at the bottom of the different artistic expressions she cultivated were common traits that were recognized by all those who had the honor and good fortune to know her, character traits that she retained until the very end, namely an endless curiosity and great enthusiasm. Gina’s eyes often sparkled, she lived on enthusiasm, and enthusiasm is contagious, it is a universal language that everyone understands.”

The project related to Gina Lollobrigida includes other subsequent activities to be held during the Venice Film Festival: a second photo exhibition celebrating Gina together with Anna Magnani, a screening of one of her restored films, and the presentation of an award dedicated to young talents in the fields of art, fashion, design and photography.

“Lollo was Lollo, no one made more news than she did,” so recalls Rino Barillari the “King of Paparazzi,” whose testimony, full of anecdotes, is included in the Exhibition catalog along with that of Stefano Dominella - President of Maison Gattinoni Couture - who recounts, among other things "The star had just finished shooting the film Venere Imperiale playing the role of Paolina Bonaparte and Gattinoni created for her evening gowns in the Empire style changing her image. That cut under the breast gave birth to the ’Lollobrigida style’ that accompanied the star throughout her extraordinary career," And again, among the testimonies present were those of Jacopo Peruzzi of Costumi d’Arte who made the dresses for the actress’s most important films, Marina Cicogna and Jean-Christophe Babin, CEO of Bulgari who recalled: "The Bulgari jewelry displayed in The Worlds of Gina comes from the Maison’s Historical Archives and was part of her personal collection. The emerald earrings, in particular, were repurchased in 2013 at an auction whose proceeds were donated by the actress to stem cell research. Such a noble gesture testifies to how success and fame had not dented her ability to be in touch with reality."

Gina’s Worlds will exhibit: 120 photographs, 2 original dresses made for the Actress by Gattinoni and 2 costumes from the films “Imperial Venus” and “The Most Beautiful Woman in the World” made by Costumi d’Arte and some Bulgari jewelry.
