From April 20 to June 30, 2024, the Sabe Foundation for Art in Ravenna presents ITALIA REVISITED #1. Samples for Images, a solo exhibition by Massimo Baldini, curated by Claudio Marra, under the patronage of the Municipality of Ravenna and the Department of Cultural Heritage of the University of Bologna - Ravenna Campus and realized in collaboration with the Ravenna Academy of Fine Arts. The exhibition space opened up to photography by exploring its relations with plastic research, landscape and space, physical and mental. Massimo Baldini, a photographer born in Ancona but Bolognese by adoption, is the author of a new way of seeing the Italian landscape, sampled in images in his first volume of Italia Revisited #1, marked by flashes of irony and magnificent incongruities: a lampshade winks at Brunelleschi’s dome, Michelangelo’s David guards an ATM, a Riace bronze guarantees a TripAdvisor report, the decorator of a pizzeria quotes Edvard Munch. Italia Revisited is a long-term multi-segment project, presented in 2023 at the Baraccano in Bologna and now re-presented in a new installation conceived for the spaces of the Sabe Foundation for Art, with an unprecedented tribute to Ravenna.
Claudio Marra, former professor of History of Photography at the University of Bologna, through texts that constitute a point of reference in the field (from Le idee della fotografia 2001 to Nelle ombre di un sogno, 2004, from L’immagine infedele, 2006, to Fotografia e pittura nel Novecento (e oltre), 2012, from Fotografia e arti visive, 2014 to Che cos’è photography, 2017) investigated from a historical perspective the relationships between photography and the visual arts, as well as those with the specific field of fashion, along with theoretical aspects related to the identity of the medium and the problems opened by the transition from the analog to the digital system.
After working in publishing for a long time, Massimo Baldini devoted himself exclusively to photography. His solo exhibitions include Italianité, Paris, Maison de l’Italie, 2017; A Tour not so Grand, Bologna, Fondazione Carlo Gajani, 2018; White Noise, Milan, Galleria Made4Art, 2022. He published the photographic book Gli italiani, with texts selected by Claudio Giunta, Bologna, Il Mulino, 2019. With Human/Nature he participated in MIA Photo Fair, Milan, 2024.
