Access Gallery in Pietrasanta will host from June 16 to July 18, 2019 the first Italian solo exhibition of Chinese-American artist Warren King, titled Warren King. Memories Handed Down. The focus of his production is theexploration of the connections between Eastern and Western cultures: the result is sculpture constructed by cutting and folding cardboard, evoking the lessons of Eastern portraiture along with the shapes and colors of Analytic Cubism in order to investigate the dynamics of contemporary global and itinerant society through his own personal history.
About ten works in corrugated cardboard and ink among the most significant of his production will be exhibited: medium- and large-scale sculptures and bas-reliefs. These belong to the Idols series, sculptures depicting Buddhist idols, and Imperial Portraits, a collection of portraits of imperial rulers that explores their relationship with their grandparents, who lived within strict Chinese etiquette.
His degree in Civil Engineering probably influenced his idea of sculpture as construction and his choice to use cardboard as a medium of expression, a material that has some structural limitations, such as the restriction of the shapes and directions in which it can be folded, but which the artist imbues with an extraordinary fluidity. Typical of his art are the decomposition of volumes andabstraction; the red ink patina that covers the sculptures refers back to Chinese lacquer.
Her works are intended to reflect onidentity:“Through my art I try to understand the fragile connections between people and culture and to investigate whether these connections, once broken, can be restored. My art practice is a means, for me, to understand how the influence of cultural roots resists the effects of migration and can be perceived beyond vastness of time and space,” the artist declares.
