In Paris and Milan, Maurizio Canesso Galleries celebrate 30 years with two exhibitions

From May 16 to June 28, 2024, Maurizio Canesso's two Galleries in Milan and Paris will display masterpieces by Baroque and Renaissance masters to celebrate the Gallery's 30th anniversary.

From May 16 to June 28, 2024, in Maurizio Canesso’s two Galleries, one in Paris and the second in Milan, one can admire paintings of the highest caliber, Evaristo Bachenis, Bernardo Strozzi, Alessandro Magnasco, Gian Paolo Lomazzo, Giuseppe Bonito, Gaspare Travesi, Tanzio da Varallo, and other masters of the Italian Baroque and Renaissance. Maurizio Canesso, for his Milan venue, wanted an exhibition space surrounded by greenery in what used to be the garden greenhouse of Casa Valerio, behind the Brera Art Gallery. Among the works on display is a work by the so-called “Master of the Denim Canvas,” a painter from the Lombard area who was active in the second half of the 17th century and “specialized” in painting subjects wearing clothes in that fabric of Italian origin, which later became popular thanks to large American manufacturers.

Maurizio Canesso focused his research on specializing in the Italian Renaissance and Baroque, expanding his field of interest to include non-Italian artists who worked in the peninsula. This choice led him to become one of the world’s most renowned Italian art dealers. The works that have passed through his hands have become part of prestigious private collections and major museums on several continents. These include the Metropolitan Museum in New York, the Getty Museum in Los Angeles, the National Gallery in Ottawa, the National Gallery in Melbourne, the Kunsthaus in Zurich, the Museo di Capodimonte in Naples, the Uffizi in Florence, the Gallerie dell’Accademia in Venice, the Louvre in Paris and Abu Dhabi, to name a few. Maurizio Canesso, a native of Venice, has been passionate about antiques since his youth. After taking his first steps as an art dealer as a 20-year-old, he was noticed by Piero Corsini, an influential dealer active in America, and working for Corsini, he was able to expand his knowledge and relationships in the art world. In 1988, he decided to go his own way and opened his own gallery in Paris, where he moved with his family. In 1994, he opened his first gallery away from the noise of the city that could spoil the contemplation of the paintings.

Over the years he also learned the importance of patience: “You have to know how to preserve the work, to value it before you want to give it away,” he explains “It takes great strength not to deprive yourself of it too quickly; the difficulty of the profession is all here.” “After so many years away from Italy, it is a joy to return to my homeland, which has always been at the center of my interests,” Canesso continues as he opens a gallery in Lugano in 2010 and a new location, directed by Ginevra Agliardi, in Milan’s historic Brera district in 2021.
