Palazzo Lomellino in Genoa will host an exhibition entirely dedicated to Bernardo Strozzi from October 2019.

On the occasion of the 15th anniversary of the opening of Palazzo Nicolosio Lomellino in Genoa to the public, the exhibition Bernardo Strozzi (1582/1644). The Conquest of Color. The monographic exhibition will showcase about fifty works, including about twenty never before exhibited and seven previously unseen absolute works, to retrace the most significant moments in the career of one of the leading artists of the seventeenth century.

The Genoese residence included in the Rolli di Strada Nuova preserves the extraordinary cycle of frescoes by Bernardo Strozzi, rediscovered on the first piano nobile in 2000.



The monographic exhibition, promoted by theAssociazione Palazzo Lomellino di Strada Nuova Onlus and curated by Anna Orlando and Daniele Sanguineti, is an exceptional opportunity to see the painter’s work compared with his cycle of frescoes recently brought to light and the only one on public display in a museum setting.

The exhibition aims to show the public the best of Strozzi’s artistic production and the most fascinating aspects of his singular contribution to the history of seventeenth-century Genoese painting, through paintings for domestic devotion, altarpieces, portraits and still lifes. Arriving in the central hall on the first piano nobile, one can admire the masterpiece fresco. Here, a system of mirrors will invite visitors to observe the colorful tale of theAllegory of the Evangelization of the New World that the artist imagined for Marquis Luigi Centurione, then owner of the Palace. Also featured in the exhibition are the planning stages for the large canvas, dispersed but evidenced by a fragment and two large sketches, which Strozzi painted around 1635 for the ceiling of the Church of the Incurabili in Venice.

Among the masterpieces on display are theAllegory of Painting from the National Gallery of Liguria in Palazzo Spinola, The Fame from the National Gallery in London, and the Lute Player from the Kunsthistoriches Museum in Vienna.

The exhibition will conclude with an educational room designed to explore the theme of the workshop with a direct comparison between two autograph replicas of the same subject and an intriguing workshop work, still on first canvas, which can also be observed on the back.

A rich calendar of collateral events and initiatives will also be planned to further explore the work of Bernardo Strozzi, involving the entire Ligurian territory.
