From February 16 to April 22, 2023, the New Morone Gallery in Milan, in collaboration with the Maria Lai Archive and Foundation, presents a solo exhibition of Maria Lai ’s work entitled On the Edge of Infinity, accompanied by a text by Gabi Scardi.
The exhibition is intended as a tribute to the artist on the occasion of the 10th anniversary of her first solo show at the gallery and to celebrate the 10th anniversary of her death.
Through a selection of works, the exhibition proposes ananthropological investigation through an account of Maria Lai’s enchanted and mythological world, starting with the legendary figures of the Janas, ancient deities who, according to Sardinian tradition, spent their time weaving. This action, the focus of the artist’s work, becomes the object of a solitary meditation, anintimate reflection on tradition, poetically reconstructing a link between archaic past and present.
The works on display express the polymateric nature that characterizes Maria Lai’s work: the Scialle delle Janas, a cascade of terracotta tablets on which the motifs of traditional textiles are imprinted; the Wall, constructed from cements softened by glazed terracottas inserted within them; the Geographies, geometries of white threads on black velvet; the Books sewn of cloth with illegible texts that, between the pages, reveal a poetic universe. Terracotta, cement, fabric, threads, velvet, enamel and tempera contribute to a personal symphony of materials and techniques.
