Gaggenau DesignElementi Hub Milan presents until July 29, 2021, as part of CRAMUM, the solo exhibition of Fabio Sandri (Valdagno, 1964) entitled IO / N, curated by Sabino Maria Frassà.
Fabio Sandri’s large-scale photographic works narrate the immanence of our existence: nothing exists separate from its surroundings. It is through light that Sabdri reveals a form of coessentiality: through his artistic gesture the ego, understood as a subject separated from the surrounding reality, becomes a WE. After this transformation, the world appears suspended, dematerialized, consisting of projections and shadows. The photographer’s entire work is based on the frustration of the indefinite, which stands in stark contrast to the notion that photography is the best and most truthful way to portray the world around us. Photography for Sandri is a tool for investigating the essence of reality in its entirety, which is revealed in theinteraction between matter and light.
This reinterpretation of the photographer’s entire production is the basis of the exhibition IO / NOI. The exhibition path kicks off with Nucleus, which expresses the restlessness and monstrosity (in the sense of “out of the ordinary” of the human ego: the light in a zenith position on the head of the artist, imprisoned in a metal cage, gives rise to a large self-portrait in which the silhouette of the body is hardly distorted, merging with the shadows. The link with the fleshed-out human figure of Giacometti and Bacon is strong; unlike Bacon, however, from the fading of the ego, for Sandri, an unprecedented grandeur of existence seems to emerge, albeit deformed and in some cases grotesque.
The photographer often uses off-camera techniques involving contact with photographic paper, not altering reality. His works are always life-size, that is, in the ontological and experiential dimension of a body of space. Therefore, the artist shows how the self is increasingly recast with and in the surrounding reality, rediscovering its immanence. This process of collapse-fusion is evident in the works Stanze (from 2004) and Autoritratti (from 2010) in which the artist is able to record existence in the continuous becoming of reality. In this sense, photographic light is for Sandri ultimately the fundamental tool of knowledge and unveiling of the real.
The transition from the I to the WE is accomplished in the last work entitled Filter, which records the becoming of light in space throughout the time of the exhibition, filtering and not allowing bodies to remain imprinted on the photographic paper. The end result is the “photograph” of the exhibition, understood as a section of a reality captured in its complexity and totality, as a record of the sum of all those WE, animate and inanimate, who will live and animate that space.
