From Nov. 27, 2021 to Feb. 13, 2022, the PAC Padiglione d’Arte Contemporanea in Milan presents the first solo exhibition in Italy of Tania Bruguera, an artist and activist known for her performances and installations that analyze power structures and the ways in which art can be applied to everyday political life.
Truth even at the expense of the world, this is the title of the exhibition curated by Diego Sileo, offers the public a selection of the artist’s most significant actions and some new works designed for the Milan space, including a work created in collaboration with theAssociazione Nazionale Ex Deportati nei Campi Nazisti (ANED). Visitors will thus have the opportunity to confront a series of installations and actions centered on the concepts developed by Bruguera herself to define her practice, namely as a behavioral art that emphasizes the limits of language and the body in relation to the reaction of the viewers, and as a useful art aimed at achieving a real transformation of certain political and legal aspects of society.
The title of the exhibition is a quote from Hannah Arendt, a fundamental reference point for Tania Bruguera’s research. In a famous interview on the television of the Federal Republic of Germany, conducted by Günter Gaus on October 28, 1964, when asked if she considered it her duty to publish everything she knew about or were there valid reasons for keeping silent about certain things, Hannah Arendt responded with the Latin quote “fiat veritas et pereat mundus,” meaning “let the truth be told even at the expense of the world.”
A recipient of prestigious awards such as the Robert Rauschenberg Prize, the Guggenheim Fellowship and the Prince Claus Fund Laureate, tania Bruguera has exhibited in institutions around the world, including the Tate Turbine Hall Commission, the Venice Biennale and Documenta 11. Her works are in the collection of the Guggenheim Museum, MoMA, Van Abbemuseum, Tate Modern, and Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana.
