Tube Culture Hall in Milan continues its program of promoting contemporary artists and presents the first Italian solo exhibition of the young Swiss artist Sophie Ullrich, born in Geneva in 1990.
Situation permitting, the exhibition will be viewable in person from April 16 to May 30, 2021 (directions on how to access the premises will be provided at www.tubeculture.it) or virtually, through the insights and audiovisual contributions offered on the Instagram Page @tubeculturehall.
The exhibition is titled Bored Queen Overlooks Her Fields and is intended to be a reflection on the immediate present. The artists’ research and poetics in these pandemic months have been influenced by the forced absence of sociality, limited mobility, boredom, and outdoor walks. From the denied contact and physiognomy erased by masks, the closure of cultural sites and creative spaces. Covid-19 marked a new timeline. But this season was also very productive for artists. Sophie Ullrich used this time to work. Exhibitions in Hamburg, Luxembourg, and Berlin were postponed and she was unable to participate in the planned residency in Los Angeles, at Danny First The Cabin, due to difficult mobility, and Bored Queen Overlooks Her Fields is the result of this controversial period.
The starting point for her solo show is the painting Heinrichs Träume, executed in 2019 and presented as part of her thesis at theDüsserdolf Academy of Art(Meisterklasse Eberhard Havekost). The detail of the famous nipple pinch of Henry IV’s mistress (Gabrielle d’Estrées et une de ses sœur, c. 1594) stands out from the canvas as if it were a collage and blends in with the typical slender and ironic characters that guide us through the exhibition.
His new 12 paintings tell of nature, of domestic activities, seasoned with the humor that we must not lose especially in these complex times.
Tube Culture Hall is a new reality located in the heart of Milan (under the surface of Piazza XXV Aprile), opening in November 2020. Located on the -1 floor of the square, it consists of a single large hall characterized by the presence of the ancient Spanish walls (dating back to 1500), which can be visited and opened to the public. Tube Culture Hall aims to be a cultural space open to exhibitions, meetings, book presentations and more.
