In Milan, Franco Mazzucchelli presents a series of new works reflecting on the meaning of art today

In Milan, at the Guggenah DesignElementi Hub, Franco Mazzucchelli presents a cycle of unpublished works at the 'Bi-Face' exhibition, June 21 to August 3, 2018.

The exhibition Bi-Face, in which the artist Franco Mazzucchelli (Milan, Italy, 1939) will present a cycle of unpublished works, called Bifacciali, is being held in Milan at the Gaggenau DesignElementi HUB spaces from June 21 to August 3, 2018. The exhibition, curated by Sabino Maria Frassà, follows the important monographic exhibition Non ti abbandonerò mai su Mazzucchelli that just ended at the Museo del Novecento, also in Milan. There are eight new works on display in Milan, and they aim to question observers about the very meaning of art today, with questions such as “What is the future of art?”, “What sense does it make to ’make’ paintings today?”, and “How important is the decorative aspect in art today?”

Mazzucchelli’s Bifacciali complete the cycle of Bieca Decorazione and are made possible by the artist’s collaboration with Tornitura Morella: their uniqueness lies in the fact that they can be considered paintings, which, however, do not hang, and sculptures, which, however, have the shape of a painting, and still are composed of reflective surfaces, but it is not possible to mirror them. “Franco Mazzucchelli,” explains Sabino Maria Frassà, “makes labyrinths of form and content with these works, overturning or resetting all certainties and points of reference. The works are unquestionably paintings, but they do not hang. The front and back end up merging into a single dimension, into a single ’façade’ that has infinite observational solutions. Not only do the front and back of the painting no longer exist, but the boundary between the artwork and the external environment does not even resist intact: what is in the background, beyond the artwork, is brought to the foreground or inside the artwork through the use of transparent Pvc. Similarly, the mirrored surfaces bring the viewer and the surrounding environment into the work. Finally, the offset ’planes’ and the alternation of transparency and mirrors lead the eye to get lost ’inside’ the work, in that ’void’ of air imprisoned in the pvc.”

The exhibition is open Monday through Friday by appointment from 10 a.m. to 6:30 p.m.
