In Milan, an exhibition to tell the story of an army's captains


From October 20, the Maspes Galleries in Milan will host the exhibition Captains of an Army. Milan and its Collectors.

From Oct. 20 to Dec. 20, 2017, the Maspes Galleries in Milan will exhibit works by artists such as Giuseppe de Nittis, Emilio Longoni, Carlo Fornara, and Antonio Mancini to analyze the importance of the so-called"captains of an army" in the formation of art collections in Milan.

The “captains of an army,” so named in 1934 by critic Raffaele Calzini, were those professionals, senators, bankers, and industrialists who, following their passion for19th- and early 20th-century Italian art, formed and enriched their collections of works of art in the Lombard capital.



Among the masterpieces on display in the exhibition"Captains of an Army. Milan and its Collectors": Giuseppe de Nittis’ never publicly exhibited painting"Place de la Concorde," Domenico Induno’s"The Antiquarian’s Bench,“ Moses Bianchi’s ”Behind the Scenes," Antonio Mancini’s"Scugnizzo with Money Box," and Emilio Longoni’s"Poppies in Bloom."

The exhibition is curated by Elisabetta Staudacher and is organized in collaboration with the Society for Fine Arts and Permanent Exhibition.
