From July 6 to September 15, 2019, Palazzo Reale in Milan presents the exhibition Nespolo fuori dal coro, a retrospective that traces the career of Italian artist Ugo Nespolo (Mosso, 1941) from the 1960s to the present, recounting his multifaceted evolutions. Promoted by the City of Milan Culture and produced by Palazzo Reale with Studio Nespolo, the exhibition is curated by Maurizio Ferraris and is structured as a journey that is not necessarily chronological, made of eclecticism and research, claiming an autonomous, original, popular role of the artist, for this reason “out of the chorus.”
Insensitive to the obligations of creative and critical conformism, Ugo Nespolo has given birth to a unique and original artist figure, between culture and irony. Never absolutely linked to a strand, his production is characterized by a pronounced ironic, transgressive imprint, a personal sense of fun that will always represent a sort of trademark.
The exhibition itinerary is divided into several chapters that highlight aspects of Nespolo’s multifaceted work, starting from the works of the 1960s presented by Pierre Restany at the Schwarz Gallery in Milan, anticipations ofArte Povera, to his relationships with patrons in homage to the attitudes of the Historic Avant-gardes.
In addition to rooms devoted to key themes in the artist’s research such as Numbers and Letters, the exhibition will feature large-scale works, drawings, collages and works made from precious materials along with artist’s books.
There is no lack of a section dedicated to experimental cinema, a language that Nespolo has appropriated since his early days: artists such as Lucio Fontana, Enrico Baj, Michelangelo Pistoletto, Alighiero Boetti, and Allen Ginsberg participate as performers in his films.
