From Sept. 20 to Nov. 16, 2024, the Glenda Cinquegrana Art Consulting Gallery in Milan presents Eroticism in Fashion Photography, the double exhibition dedicated to Helmut Newton and Ellen von Unwerth curated by Glenda Cinquegrana. The exhibition brings into dialogue two photographers united by theeroticism and sensuality of women, elements that characterize their very personal vision of fashion and celebrity photography. The exhibition hosts more than twenty vintage black-and-white and color images and sees a selection of portraits of supermodels and celebrities, landscapes, polaroids. On display are vintage photos by Helmut Newton ranging from the 1970s to the 2000s from the portfolios Rosalyn at Arcangue from the 1970s to Woman on a Level Four taken in Monte Carlo in the 2000s; a portrait of Ava Gardner from the 1970s to one of Kristen McMenamy from the 1990s; and finally, a shot from the Sex & Landscapes series. Ellen von Unwerth’s prints are featured in the exhibition, including a portrait of Claudia Schiffer for Guess from the 1990s; some shots of supermodels Naomi Campbell, Linda and Christy; Monica Bellucci and Vincent Cassel; some significant images from the Revenge series; and iconic color photographs from the 2000s. Helmut Newton in the 1980s made the double shot Sie Kommen (Naked/Dressed) placing the female body at the center of fashion photography, a signifying element of a woman’s personality, capable of constructing a scandalous and powerful narrative, taking power over her own body, over the media. From this vision, photographers of later generations, such as Ellen von Unwerth, expanded the narrative, which became increasingly imaginative. Von Unwerth mixes eroticism with a sense of humor. The exhibition will be accompanied by a digital catalog with texts by Davide Manfredi, worldwide agent for Helmut Newton from 1980 to 2004, and Glenda Cinquegrana, published by Glenda Cinquegrana Art Consulting editions.
