The exhibition Violata by photographer Domenick Giliberto is being held in Messina. Conceived as a provocative message to raise awareness against violence against women and the drama of feminicide, the photo exhibition returns to the Sicilian city after being presented two years ago at the Teatro Vittorio Emanuele. After another stop in Milazzo, this year’s exhibition opens Thursday, Nov. 22, at 6:30 p.m. on the premises of the Extravergine restaurant(Via Garibaldi, 87), and remains open until Sunday, Nov. 25, the date of the International Day Against Violence Against Women.
Domenick Giliberto offers fourteen black-and-white shots on square boards (80 centimeters on each side) made with the collaboration of young actors from theMessina Regional Theater Authority and the direction of Giovanna Manetto, representing different ways through which mental and physical violence is perpetrated on women. “The inspiration,” Giliberto explained to ADN Kronos, “comes from known tragic news cases. Unlike the news, however, where the ending is often tragic, in my photos I leave room for a message of hope. I do not freeze the shot on the crime, but a moment before. It is the nightmare of fear and, from a nightmare as from a dream, one can wake up in reality where the murder does not take place.”
“Talking about feminicide in recent years, thanks in part to the work of the many associations committed to defending and protecting women victims of violence,” adds the Sicilian photographer, “has decreased crimes and empowered victims to report. There are many ways to violate women,” Giliberto concludes, “physical brutality hurts but, through my works, I do not want to overlook the suffering that psychological violence also generates that is often, still, underestimated.”
For the organization of the event, special thanks go to the owners of the venue, who will host the exhibition for free, immediately showing great enthusiasm for the initiative and sensitivity to such an important issue. The exhibition was also created in collaboration with Yoga Time, Remax and under the patronage of Cirs Onlus Messina.
