On the occasion of the 500th anniversary of Leonardo da Vinci’s death, the Musei Civici di Monza will offer the exhibition In line with Leonardo from October 26, 2019 to January 6, 2020. Leonardo motifs in the prints of the Civic Museums of Monza.
The public will be able to admire an original selection of Leonardo-themed prints from the museum’s collection of engravings. The works on display will be prints made by engravers who graphically translated masterpieces by Leonardo or attributed to him or works by his pupils and imitators. Also, engravings of great historical paintings illustrating episodes from Leonardo’s life, which were very common in the first half of the 19th century.
This testifies not only to Leonardo’s success in the nineteenth century, but also to the role of the press in popularizing artistic culture, and to the executive skill of the master engravers. For the most part, the exhibition will feature intaglios, a particular type of engraving technique, whereby an engraved copper matrix is made using special tools or acids.
Through in-depth texts, videos, storytelling and multimedia content, visitors can discover the techniques of engraving. Multimedia content is also available on the Civic Museums webapp.
