From Nov. 25, 2023 to March 10, 2024, the exhibition Steve McCurry - Children, curated by Biba Giacchetti and Melissa Camilli (Sudest57 exhibitions team) and produced by Civita Mostre e Musei with Palazzo Ducale Fondazione per la Cultura, is on display in the Sottoporticato of the Palazzo Ducale in Genoa.
This is a thematic exhibition dedicated tochildhood: the theme of children has always been dear to the famous photographer Steve McCurry and is central to his humanist photography. The children immortalized by McCurry’s lens differ in ethnicity, dress and traditions but express the same feeling with their inexhaustible energy, joy and ability to play even in the most abnormal and difficult contexts, often determined by social, environmental or conflict conditions. According to reports from international organizations, such as Save The Children, about one in six children are still forced to live in war zones today. Against this backdrop, McCurry is deeply convinced that education can be the main tool for children to build a better future of freedom and self-determination.
From Afghanistan to India, from Mexico to Lebanon to Italy: the exhibition presents one hundred photographs that aim to describe the condition of childhood. Refugee or working children, children oblivious to danger playing climbing a cannon or frolicking in the mud, chasing a ball during a monsoon downpour, or playing a guitar made from discarded materials. Children growing up in big cities as well as in rural villages.
The exhibition is meant to be a journey into childhood: children who face such different conditions, but who speak a language in which everyone can recognize themselves. It is also a journey into the memory of one’s own childhood, and food for thought on the responsibility we have towards the new generations.
McCurry’s proposed representation of childhood and the world seen through childhood meets in a special way with the sensitivity and mission of Defence for children Internaional Italia. During the duration of the exhibition, informative, formative and educational activities are planned for adults and children to learn about and explore the condition of childhood in light of the images proposed by McCurry and the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child and Adolescent.
