Tornabuoni Arte, in its Florence venue, is hosting from Oct. 25 to Nov. 30, 2019 an extensive selection dedicated to Renato Mambor ( Rome, 1936 - 2014), curated by Federico Sardella and in collaboration with theMambor Archive. The exhibition, accompanied by an in-depth catalog, traces the multifaceted work of the artist, among the most original on the European art scene during the second half of the 20th century.
Mambor was one of the first to trespass from painting into other languages: photography, cinema, performance, installations and theater, yet always returning to painting. Continuing to work on language and the constituent elements of art, he began experimenting with the relationship between organism and environment, art and life, changing gaze and points of view, internal and external relationships, separation and unity.
An eclectic personality, he fully experienced the Rome of experimentation and the avant-garde. With Mario Schifano, Franco Angeli, Tano Festa and Cesare Tacchi, Mambor is among the leading figures of the Scuola di Piazza del Popolo. His first exhibition takes place in 1959 at the “L’Appia Antica” Gallery, and the following year he is seen among the winners of the Prizes awarded by the National Gallery of Modern Art. Thereafter, his works are offered, repeatedly, in the spaces of Plinio De Martiis’ La Tartaruga Gallery.
He lived from within the years of La Dolce Vita, so much so that he was chosen by Fellini among the performers in the film. Experience, that of cinema, which has seen him involved in numerous films and with different directors. After cinema, theater. Since 1975 he has directed the Trousse Group (a name taken from the metal sculpture he made) focusing on an inner research, on the cognitive, emotional aspects of man. For more than a decade he is an author and director of plays, and it is in the theatrical experience that he is accompanied by the woman who will become his wife, Patrizia Speciale. At the same time he expresses himself through photography and performances, videos and films.
“I want to do everything, dance, sing, write, act, do cinema, theater, poetry, I want to express myself by all means, but I want to do it as a painter because painting is not a way of doing but a way of being”: In one sentence Mambor offers a precise image of his being an artist. To painting, his lifelong love, he will in fact remain faithful until the very end.
Mambor, in his more than 55 years of artistic endeavor, tirelessly renewed forms and deepened his self-knowledge, inventing communication devices that would involve the viewer, leaving behind works, including unpublished ones, of great value to the contemporary world.
“I met and hung out with Renato Mambor,” recalls Roberto Casamonti, owner of Tornabuoni Arte, “each time marveling at how much this man, in many ways extraordinary, knew how to create true art wherever and on whatever ’thing’ he applied himself. He was an artist who had the urgency to express himself and the courage to do so in the most diverse media. Mambor himself argued that an artist’s work should be read and considered first and foremost from today, from the very latest work and reflections. With this in mind, it was natural to think of this exhibition by considering works from the 1960s, but in the collection of works I chose to indulge my instinct and taste and favor numerous pieces from the 1990s and especially 2000s, up to the large installations ’All on the Same Floor’ and ’Wires,’ which I find particularly important and exemplifying the author’s poetics.”
The exhibition is enhanced by a bilingual (Italian and English) monographic volume published by Forma and edited by Federico Sardella with texts by Sardella himself, Sara Uboldi and Patrizia Speciale Mambor, as well as a conversation with Gianna Mazzini.
