In Florence, the Museo del Novecento dedicates an exhibition to Medardo Rosso

From December 20, 2018 to March 28, 2019, the Museo del Novecento in Florence is hosting the exhibition Solo. Medardo Rosso.

On view until March 28 is the exhibition Solo. Medardo Rosso, set up in the spaces of the Museo Novecento in Florence. Curated by Marco Fagioli and Sergio Risaliti, the exhibition is dedicated to Medardo Rosso (Turin, 1858 - Milan, 1928), one of the greatest Italian sculptors of the period between the 19th and 20th centuries. The sculptures on display are six: Portinaia, Grande Rieuse (“Laughing Girl”), two versions ofEnfant à la bouchée de pain (“Child at the Cheap Kitchens”), and Enfant Juif (“Jewish Child”).

The exhibition aims to be a reinterpretation of the work of the sculptor who went from being a naturalist to a symbolist, highlighting his originality and specificity within modern art. “A creator of a research with a European scope, which transcends national borders to open up to a universal and ’stateless’ reflection, Medardo Rosso can be considered as a precursor of conceptual elaboration around ’seriality,’ a characteristic that makes him particularly close to the contemporary practice of Minimal and Conceptual Art,” said Sergio Risaliti. “Just as his work on the formless and the skin of sculpture made him a point of reference for artists throughout the 20th century up to Giuseppe Penone and Arte Povera.”
