From September 28, 2023, Palazzo Medici Riccardi in Florence will host the exhibition Fortunato Depero. Fantastic Ride, through which it is intended to shed new light on the artist’s work. Curated by Sergio Risaliti and Eva Francioli and organized by Mus.e. and promoted by the Metropolitan City of Florence on a project of the Museo Novecento, the exhibition retraces some of the themes that characterized Depero’s production in order to highlight the connection of his figure and work with the Florentine territory. Great prominence will be given to the practice ofdrawing and its declinations, as well as to the complex relationship that has always linked the city of Florence to the arts, as well as to that of works on fabric, such as the splendid tapestries of which some large specimens such as Cavalcata Fantastica and Due Maschere Tropicali will be presented in the exhibition.
The exhibition will present for the first time in Florence the work of Depero, who was able to combine the popular element with a fervid figurative imagination, cartoon graphics with cartoon graphics, contemporary themes with traditional motifs such as the horse.
The project kicks off with the presence in the Museo Novecento’s collections of Nitrito in velocità (1932), a masterpiece by the artist that is part of the civic collections. The painting was donated by the naval engineer Alberto Della Ragione to the City of Florence in the aftermath of the 1966 flood, along with more than 240 works from his celebrated collection. The work, revealing Della Ragione’s openness to the experiments of the avant-garde circumscribed to the experiences of the so-called Second Futurism, is offered as an opportunity for a broader reflection on collecting and the links that can be created between collector and artist.
