The Museo Novecento is hosting, from February 17 to April 28, 2024, an exhibition by London-based artist Alessandra Ferrini (Florence, 1984), entitled Unsettling Genealogies, curated by Daphne Vitali. An artist and researcher, Alessandra Ferrini pursues a practice that reflects on the legacies of Italian colonialism and fascism, focusing on the relationships betweenItaly, North Africa and the Mediterranean area. Unsettling Genealogies is a critical investigation into the history of Italian cultural institutions initiated by the artist in 2020. The investigations focus on the colonial and fascist origins of some institutions and their founders, combining personal insights and stories with historical and theoretical reflections, in an attempt to emphasize the affective dimension of history. In Unsettling Genealogies, Alessandra Ferrini interweaves a series of family histories with an investigation of colonial history, social class, European imperialism, and the fascist legacy. The work takes its cue from a photograph depicting Count Giuseppe Volpi di Misurata, an Italian businessman and politician, at the opening of the 1935 Third Venice International Film Festival.
