From December 20, 2024 to May 4, 2025, the halls of Fermo ’s Palazzo dei Priori will host the exhibition Steve McCurry - Children, conceived and curated by Biba Giacchetti. More than fifty photographs dedicated tochildhood as seen through the lens of the great photographer Steve McCurry, taken over a career spanning nearly fifty years.

A gallery of portraits to explore all facets of childhood, united by a universal element: the look of innocence. The images, from every corner of the world, depict the little ones in scenes of everyday life. The children in McCurry’s shots, though different in ethnicity, dress and traditions, share the joy of life and the ability to play even in the most difficult contexts, often marked by poverty, conflict or extreme environmental conditions. The audience will be taken on an ideal journey to countries such as India, Burma, Pakistan, Tibet, Afghanistan, Lebanon, Ethiopia and Cuba.

“Each image offers a glimpse of the most diverse social conditions, revealing a universal human condition made up of common feelings and looks that affirm the same dignity,” explains the curator. “We meet refugee and working children, young people turning a rusty cannon into a game, chasing a ball in the rain, creating music with guitars made of discarded materials. Children living in large metropolises or in remote villages, protagonists of stories of joy and aggregation, loneliness and resilience, solidarity and wonder.”

These are images that alternate between war and poetry, suffering and joy, awe and irony. Intense portraits that become symbols of authenticity and purity.

“I have had the great privilege of photographing children all over the world, and now that I have a daughter myself I appreciate their energy, their curiosity, their potential even more,” says Steve McCurry. “Despite the difficult context in which many of them are born, babies have the ability to play, smile, laugh and share small moments of joy. There is always hope that a child can grow up and change the world.”

The exhibition is sponsored by the City of Fermo with the contribution of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Fermo, in collaboration with Orion57, partner Mus-e del Fermano. Organized by Maggioli Culture and Tourism.
