In Correggio the largest exhibition ever dedicated to Carmela Adani, sculptor of the early 20th century

From April 12 to July 2025, the "Il Correggio" Civic Museum will host the largest exhibition ever dedicated to Carmela Adani, an extraordinarily talented sculptor of the early 20th century and a leading figure in art capable of spanning the 20th century with strength and sensitivity.

Correggio (Reggio Emilia) will host in the Exhibition Galleries of the Civic Museum “Il Correggio” the largest exhibition ever dedicated to Carmela Adani (Modena, 1899 - Correggio, 1965), an extraordinarily talented sculptor of the early 20th century and the protagonist of an art capable of crossing the 20th century with strength and sensitivity. Curated by Francesca Manzini and Renza Bolognesi, with scientific advice from Ilaria Baratta, and open from April 12 to July 2025, Carmela Adani. Sculptress, this is the title of the exhibition, will trace the production of an artist who, thanks to her aptitude for manual activities and her strength, was able to create complex and monumental sculptures rich in detail, as well as realistic and extremely fine portraits of adolescents, elderly women, children, bodies of saints and virile nudes, shaping and embroidering marble.

Her petite physicality and her modest and humble character that distinguished her appearance and personality was in fact in apparent contrast to her energy, dexterity and determination to master the most difficult and most strenuous material to work with, alone with hammer and chisel. That same determination she put into the constant study and commitment that got her started in the artist’s trade and in pursuing for the rest of her life that passion that had animated her since childhood, never abandoning her aspirations despite the mentality and constraints of the time especially towards women.

In the socio-cultural context of the early twentieth century, despite the difficulties and prejudices, Carmela Adani indulged her innate artistic inclinations by devoting herself body and soul to art and sculpture. Her labors, careful study andconstant practice were rewarded: for her great skills in drawing she was admitted to theAcademy of Fine Arts in Florence and was one of the first women in Italy to graduate in architectural drawing. She became not only one of the rare sculptors of the early 20th century (she was the only woman among about eighty sculptors from around the world to participate in the competition for the new bronze doors of St. Peter’s Basilica in the Vatican), but also among the most refined.

The opening will be held on Saturday, April 12, 2025 at 4 p.m. at the Palazzo dei Principi in Correggio. Free admission.

The exhibition enjoys the patronage of the City of Modena, the Emilia Romagna Region and the Diocese of Reggio Emilia and Guastalla.
