The Antonio Dalle Nogare Foundation in Bolzano welcomes until May 9, 2020 the solo exhibition of German artist Peter Wächtler (Hannover, 1979), entitled Up the Heavies.
As the title, which literally means “lifting the heavy,” anticipates, the exhibition aims to play with the idea of opposites: speed and slowness, heaviness and lightness, abstraction and figuration, large and small, narrative and representation, specificity and generalism.
The exhibition route opens in the large room on the ground floor, where three series of sculptures, black and white photographs and a series of watercolors are placed. The three groups of sculptures are different in form, materials and intent: flowers, animals and cranes in bronze, steel and glass. Thus, juxtapositions are created between the flowers and the cranes, natural and industrial elements, which are also different in technique. The two bronze sculptures depicting a wolf and a bear are represented as two sailors in motion, and unlike the other sculptures, which are less refined and almost sketchy, these are made from one of the noble materials of classical sculpture and are defined to the smallest detail.
Moreover, while the photographs document a series of shots taken in Bolzano at typical locations in the city, the watercolors depict generic, almost fantastical landscapes; and again, while the photographs are dominated by chiaroscuro, the watercolors are characterized by a general opacity.
The video room then presents Untitled (Vampire), the artist’s latest film: co-produced by the Antonio Dalle Nogare Foundation and the Kunsthalle Zurich, the film features a vampire played by Wächtler himself. It is another example of opposition, as the vampire exists in a continuous dichotomy between life and death, but also between reality and fiction.
