For the first time in Italy, an exhibition encompassing an important selection of Andy Warhol, Keith Haring and Jean-Michel Basquiat, namely the father of Pop Art and his two spiritual sons, is being offered. A spiritual partnership that was born in the world of music and clubs of 1980s underground New York, when art “happened” at night. It will be held from March 11, 2023, at Palazzo Belloni in Bologna, the exhibition WARHOL HARING BASQUIAT, which was created precisely with the intention of reconstructing the climate of creativity that could be breathed in the meeting places where the three artists transformed the excesses of the 1980s into art.
Wide attention will be devoted to Warhol’s pioneering work in relation to the world of music, to trace the various stages that led the father of Pop Art to rise as one of the first artists to transform this sphere into art. Also on display will be Warhol’s original and signed copy of the vinyl cover “The Velvet Underground & Nico by Andy Warhol,” still regarded as the most famous cover in the world, bearing not the name of the group, but only the famous banana and Andy Warhol’s signature. Along with all the other famous designed covers, among which the one for The Rolling Stones’ album “Sticky Fingers” stands out in importance, and the original polaroids depicting the main musical artists with whom Warhol established a working relationship and friendship. There are also some original examples of guitars and memorabilia accompanied by valuable collectibles such as the famous TIME cover from 1984, which features a portrait of Michael Jackson done by Warhol on the cover.
One of the temples of 1980s New York was Club 57 in theEast Village, frequented by all three artists, an open space where performances combining poetry, music, painting, fashion, photography and video were staged. Haring became its artistic curator, decorating it with his graffiti. The exhibition will feature all major music covers made by the artist, along with valuable historical evidence such as original photographs and various collectibles, including vinyl covers made for his friend DJ and curator of the Paradise Garage club, Larry Levan.
Ample space will then be devoted to the figure of Jean-Michel Basquiat. Shaped as well by the electricity of those years, Basquiat instead became very passionate about Jazz, particularly the Be-bop genre. The most famous cover designed by the African American artist, considered today as the “Holy Grail of Rap,” is Beat Bop, created in collaboration with his artist friend Rammellzee. One of the 500 extremely rare 1983 editions will be on display. Also on display will be the artist’s other most famous covers, including “Gray” and “The Offs,” along with other important historical records.
To complete the exhibition and contextualize it in what was the Pop Art revolution, there will be three rare silkscreens made by Andy Warhol on T-Shirts and each representing the faces of the three artists. This is yet another demonstration that the artist is no longer an intellectual marginalized by society, but a true brand reproduced on the most popular garment of that period: a T-shirt.
The exhibition opens Wednesday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m., Sunday from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Closed Mondays and Tuesdays, last admission one hour before closing. Tickets from 12 euros + presale with the Ticket One circuit from Tuesday, December 13. Tickets also on sale at the Palazzo Belloni box office during regular exhibition opening days and hours.
