In Bern, a seventeenth-century painting leads ... on the road to happiness

The Kunstmuseum Bern presents an exhibition focusing on the Bernese Tablet of Cebete to lead visitors on the path to happiness.

From September 3 to November 28, 2021, the Kunstmuseum Bern presents an exhibition to lead visitors... on the road to happiness.

The focus of the exhibition The Road to Happiness. The Bernese Tablet of Cebete and Baroque Imagery is Joseph Plepp’s Bernese Tablet of Cebete, a monumental painting made in 1633 from the holdings of the Kunstmuseum Bern. The elements and figures depicted in the Tablet refer to an ancient Greek text describing a votive tablet for a temple dedicated to Chronos: this describes the path man must follow to lead a happy life.

The path is studded with personifications of the difficulties, disappointments and misguided temptations that man must face on his path, as well as those of wisdom and virtue. More than two hundred figures are represented there, whose task is to accompany the viewer on the path to happiness.

The arrangement of the exhibition and the choice of a selection of other works of art, including drawings, prints and paintings, which are added to the Cebete Tablet on the occasion of the exhibition are by students of theInstitute of Art History at the University of Bern, as part of a seminar dedicated to the study, contextualization and presentation of the Cebete Tablet. The exhibition is thus organized in collaboration with the University of Bern.
