In Asti, more than 100 works by Escher for an immersion in his geometric and seemingly impossible worlds

The rooms of Palazzo Mazzetti in Asti will host an exhibition dedicated to Maurits Cornelis Escher: more than 100 works to immerse oneself in his geometric and seemingly impossible worlds.

From Nov. 16, 2024 to May 11, 2025, the halls of Palazzo Mazzetti in Asti will host an exhibition dedicated to Maurits Cornelis Escher (Leeuwarden, 1898 - Laren, 1972), a visionary artist beloved around the world. Escher is famous not only among art lovers, but also among mathematicians, designers and graphic designers for his ability to combine art and numbers, science and nature, reality and imagination, creating fantastic worlds and fascinating paradoxes, always accompanied by a strong scientific rigor.

Born in 1898 in Leeuwarden, Holland, Escher developed an unmistakable style that continues to capture the attention of the general public. His works invite the exploration of imaginary and seemingly impossible worlds in which geometric theorems, mathematical insights, philosophical reflections and paradoxes of logic converge. His art, which has also influenced design and advertising, represents a real challenge to visual perception.

The exhibition in Asti, where more than 100 works will be on display, is curated by Federico Giudiceandrea and will trace Escher’s entire creative journey, from his beginnings to his travels in Italy, to the artistic techniques that engaged him throughout his life and made him famous. The exhibition includes educational insights, videos and immersive rooms to give the public a comprehensive overview of the artist’s evolution.

Among the most iconic works in the exhibition are Hand with Reflecting Sphere (1935), Bond of Union (1956), Metamorphosis II (1939), Day and Night (1938) and the celebrated Emblemata series. The exhibition also explores his famous tessellations, metamorphoses, spatial structures and geometric paradoxes, emphasizing how a true Eschermania was born from the 1950s onward.

“Fondazione Asti Musei,” said the President of Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Asti, Livio Negro, “is pleased to offer you a journey through the mind of an artist who was able to combine art, mathematics and philosophy in a unique and original way. I am sure that Escher’s exhibition will not only enrich the city’s cultural offerings by creating connections and stimulating an active dialogue between art, science and community, but will actively involve all of us. Last but not least, the exhibition is part of a successful journey that has seen exhibitions dedicated to Chagall, Monet and the Im pressionists in Normandy, the Macchiaioli, Giovanni Boldini and Caravaggio’s Canestra come to Asti.”

The ESCHER exhibition is organized by the Fondazione Asti Musei, Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Asti, the Piedmont Region and the Municipality of Asti, with a contribution from the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Torino, in collaboration with Arthemisia, the M.C. Escher Foundation and Maurits, and under the patronage of the Province of Asti. Sponsor the Cassa di Risparmio di Asti Group.
