The Polo Museale della Toscana and Munus Arts & Culture organize the exhibition Ancient Reflections, Contemporary Visions. Arezzo and its Territory. #Turismolento in the Lower Basilica of San Francesco in Arezzo, which houses the splendid cycle of frescoes by Piero della Francesca dedicated to the Legend of the True Cross. The brainchild of Rossella Sileno, director of the Basilica and curated by Lorenzo Soave and Ilaria Pugi, it is open to the public from July 5, 2019 to January 6, 2020.
The exhibition is being held as part of the events dedicated by the Ministry of Cultural Heritage and Activities in 2019 to the year of "Slow Tourism." The exhibition brings photography to the forefront as a cultural medium, a means of communication and dissemination of knowledge of one of the most significant territories in Italy from a historical, naturalistic and artistic point of view, broadening the horizons of the general public and involving, through a dedicated section, young people and families as well.
An important nucleus of photographic works and an emotional video narrate the evocative territory of Arezzo: the Casentino, Valdarno, Valdichiana and Valtiberina. The more than 200 photographic works on display and the video made ad hoc with the use of drones showcase the immense landscape and architectural heritage of the territory surrounding the city of Arezzo, which fans out from the center of the plain to its four valleys, the Casentino, Valdarno, Valdichiana and Valtiberina, and is one of the preferred destinations for practicing so-called Slow Tourism. It is a landscape dear to Piero della Francesca himself, who in the frescoes of the Basilica, painted between 1453 and 1459, did not fail to capture its essence, leaving us also splendid depictions of Arezzo itself, perched on its hill, and Sansepolcro.
The exhibition is divided into seven sections: one dedicated entirely to the city of Arezzo, four to the valleys of Arezzo, the video-documentary projection room and an educational section that will allow the younger generations and their families to learn about the flora and fauna of the area, by means of an interactive installation. Fundamental to the realization of the exhibition was the participation of the Photoclubs of the Arezzo area, which will exhibit a selection of their photographic works dedicated to slow tourism and collective and conscious participation.
2019 is the year of “Slow Tourism,” and the presence in the title of the exhibition of the dedicated hashtag is addressed to a wide, contemporary audience, attentive to all that is “social,” but at the same time interested in the rediscovery of a natural and cultural universe seemingly distant, in reality only a few steps away from us and to which, also thanks to photography, we can easily reconnect in a conscious way. The “slow” approach imposed by photography favors, in fact, innovative experiences and contributes to enhance the Italian territories less known by international tourism and to relaunch them in a sustainable way with the innovative re-proposition of places, memories, knowledge that make our country a unique place: a circuit of beauty extraordinarily spread throughout its physical territory and along a span of centuries of civilization.
The exhibition is organized by Munus Arts & Culture and the Polo Museale della Toscana, under the patronage of the Region of Tuscany, the Province of Arezzo, the Municipality of Arezzo and the municipalities in the province, with the collaboration of the Italian Touring Club, the association I Borghi Più Belli d’Italia, with the contribution of Valdichiana Outlet Village and Argenterie Giovanni Raspini, and with the participation of numerous photo clubs and Fotoclubs in the area: for Valdichiana, the Fotoclubs “Il Sansovino,” “Etruria” and “Fanfulla;” for Valdarno, the Associazione Fotoamatori “Francesco Mochi” and Fotoamatori Ciuffenna “Italo Baldi”; for Casentino, the Italian Center of Author Photography and the Photographic Association “Walter Soldani”; for Valtiberina, the Photographic Center “Tifernate.”
