In 2022, the MARCA in Catanzaro retraces the expressive research of Aron Demetz

The MARCA in Catanzaro is hosting a site-specific exhibition project by Aron Demetz from Jan. 15 to March 31, 2022 that revolves around the concept of autarky.

From January 15 to March 31, 2022, the MARCA museum in Catanzaro will host the exhibition Aron Demetz. Autarkeia II. The Lure of Matter, curated by Alessandro Romanini and promoted by the Rocco Guglielmo Foundation, in collaboration with the Province of Catanzaro. The exhibition comes at a time of great attention from critics and collectors throughout Europe for the works, mostly in wood, by the Val Gardena-born artist.

"Being invited to exhibit at MARCA by the Rocco Guglielmo Foundation with a site-specific project,“ Demetz comments, ”is doubly stimulating for me. First of all, because the MARCA has already been the site of important sculpture exhibitions, and secondly because for an artist to exhibit his or her sculptural works in Catanzaro, in the midst of Magna Graecia, inevitably means confronting the genius loci of a land that has its roots in the Greco-Roman artistic-cultural tradition."

The exhibition revolves around the concept of Autarchy, derived from the Greek Autarkeia and declined in a series of formal solutions semantically connected to the concept of “Self-sufficiency.” In Demetz’s understanding, Autarkeia is not to be understood as “settling for,” but rather "as a form of achievement conveyed by a rigid self-discipline, sustained by inexhaustible research and exercise and fueled by a continuous confrontation with the historical cornerstones of plastic art. And among the latter, the dimension related toGreek art is in first place," the curator writes.

Research and experimentation characterize the entire career of the artist, descended from a family of sculptors and originally from Val Gardena.

With Demetz, wood becomes the author of a narrative; resins from trees in his home mountains by fire corrode and reshape the objective beauty of forms, creating sores on the carved nude bodies. Progressively we see the entry of other materials, such as bronze, plaster, and glass, just as the single figure is joined by groups of figures and finally installations.
As Romaninini explains, “Thirty years of a spirit of research, of adventure, see in experimentation the only possible condition and in error not failure but the engine and fulcrum of every potential new linguistic, expressive and technical achievement.”

The Catanzaro exhibition offers a series of works that are witnesses to the path of this expressive research: figural works in wood, bronze, plaster and glass, confirming how in Demetz sculpture is thought translated into form.

In the exhibition itinerary, a space will be devoted to drawing, allowing the viewer to understand the central role of the graphic element as a design element. An audio video will also document the various components of the artist’s style and techniques.
