In 2019 a major anthological exhibition dedicated to Letizia Battaglia in Venice

Letizia Battaglia. Photography as a Life Choice will be the major anthological exhibition hosted in 2019 at the Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice.

The Casa dei Tre Oci in Venice will host a major photography exhibition dedicated to Letizia Battaglia (Palermo, 1935), one of Italy’s most significant female photographers, from March 21 to August 18, 2019.

The anthological exhibition entitled Letizia Battaglia. Photography as a choice of life traces the artist’s entire career through two hundred images, many of them previously unpublished. Ordered by themes, the exhibition covers topics characteristic of Letizia Battaglia’s artistic expression, such as portraits of women, men, animals, children, cities, politics, life, death, and love: a poetic and political photographer who considered photography as a document, an interpretation, a salvation and a truth. With her photographs she represented what the Mafia was to her city, from murders to mourning, from political intrigue to the struggle that was identified with the figures of Falcone and Borsellino. He also recounted the lives of the poor and the uprisings of the squares, always keeping the city as a privileged space for the observation of reality, as well as its urban landscape.
An itinerary intended to reinforce the artist’s ideologies and convictions regarding society, political engagement, marginalized realities, violence caused by power wars, and the emancipation of women.

The exhibition is curated by Francesca Alfano Miglietti and organized by Civita Tre Venezie, in collaboration with theLetizia Battaglia Archive and with the participation of the Venice Foundation.
