How is a work in marble created? An exhibition in Carrara on the work in progress of craft workshops

From July 4 to September 8, 2019, the Carrara Plastic Arts Center is hosting the exhibition 'Carrara Studi Aperti WIP @ CAP'.

It is titled Carrara Studi Aperti WIP @ CAP, the exhibition that from July 4 to September 8, 2019 is organized in the halls of the Plastic Arts Center (CAP) in Carrara: “WIP” stands for “Work In Progress” (“work in progress”) and is a summary of the soul of the exhibition, which is to show how a work of an art workshop is created. Marble workshops in the city of Carrara, for two months, move inside the museums to give visitors a way to follow the process of creating works up close. It is also a way to bring to the attention of the general public the artistic activity that is carried out in the city’s workshops.

The event also aims to promote, for the duration of the summer, the now well-known Carrara Studi Aperti event, which for several years (since 2013) has been bringing the studios and workshops of artists in the city to open their doors to the public for a few days: the 2019 edition will also be organized by the Social Promotion Association Oltre (which also organizes the CAP exhibition in collaboration with the City’s Department of Culture), and will run from August 30 to September 1, 2019. The Carrara Studi Aperti WIP @ CAP exhibition is a preview of it.

Since its first edition, Carrara Studi Aperti has given thousands of people the opportunity to get in touch with the reality of marble workshops, growing in quantity and quality, and the exhibition aims to be one more opportunity to address the public. The exhibition, representatives of the Oltre Association point out, “was created with the intention of promoting during the summer months Carrara Studi Aperti, in order to increase its appeal and participation. Each studio, even those where more than one artist is working, will be represented by a work still in progress (hence the term WIP, work in progress), which will be completed later during the days of Studi Aperti. The individual artist will not be promoted, but the workshop as an entity, which is why in the exhibition itinerary the name of the author of the work (or group) will not be indicated: the works presented will be associated with the workshops of origin with a didactic panel showing the name of the studio, a photo, a brief description of the workshop and the work presented, the data and contacts of the artists working in the studio and the number to which the workshop is connected on the map of Carrara Studi Aperti 2019.”

The project also benefits from the collaboration of the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Carrara: the President of the Fondazione CRC, Enrico Isoppi lets it be known that the foundation has enthusiastically welcomed this project, which aims to revive an ancient attitude of the territory: “The Fondazione CRC,” Isoppi declares, “has the duty to support initiatives like this one, which aims to recover ancient traditions to project them into the future, with the aim of revitalizing the territory, involving different skills and professionalism. A project of everyone, President Isoppi concludes, to give visibility to such an important reality as that of art workshops: refounding our history, overcoming the limits of the past, creating a network available to those who come to visit our territory.”

“We are pleased to have activated these important collaborations with the City’s Department of Culture and the CRC Foundation to revitalize the city,” emphasizes Juan Carlos Allende, president of the Oltre Association. “The City Council and Foundation deserve special thanks, along with the businesses that are supporting us.” The Oltre Association is also involved in other important projects: it is currently working to forge new collaborations with entities in the area, with the aim of further expanding the membership of workshops present in Carrara. A collaboration with the Con-vivere Festival is also being defined, which will allow a fruitful exchange between the two events in terms of mutual promotion and content.

The exhibition opens daily (except Mondays) from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. For information call 0585/779681 or email centro.arti.plastiche@comune.carrara.ms.it or info@carrarastudiaperti.it, or visit the Carrara Studi Aperti website.
