Until May 1, 2023, the Palazzo dei Consoli in Gubbio is hosting the exhibition Leonardo’s Wits. Machines, curated by Gabriele Niccolai, promoted by the Municipality of Gubbio and Gubbio Cultura and Multiservizi, with the contribution of the Region of Umbria and in collaboration with the Leonardo da Vinci Museum in Florence.
The watchword for this new exhibition celebrating the art and genius of Leonardo da Vinci is"Forbidden Not to Touch": interactive reconstructions of Leonardo’s machines and inventions are on display, and the more than fifty models on display, faithfully reconstructed by hand, come from the Leonardo da Vinci Museum in Florence. A section of the exhibition is dedicated to younger children, with interactive games inspired by the genius’ machines.
Models of military, civil engineering and hydraulic machines are on display, alongside studies for human flight and curious objects, ready to amaze visitors of all ages who can independently operate them and discover how they work. Some reconstructions of Leonardo’s machines can also be admired in evocative outdoor spaces in Gubbio’s historic center.
“The exhibition on Leonardo da Vinci, in particular, thanks also to the possibility of interacting with the material on display, will be extremely attractive to the school world, toward which a large part of our promotion will be directed,” said Gubbio Mayor Filippo Stirati.
“We are inaugurating an exhibition dedicated to one of the most ’pop’ figures in the historical-artistic panorama of the Belpaese, Leonardo da Vinci, a scientist, inventor and artist, a man of ingenuity and universal talent,” added Culture Councillor Giovanna Uccellani. “An exhibition that will really allow everyone to get to know the Tuscan genius more closely, precisely because of the possibility of interacting with the works on display and thus understand their use. On display will also be machines that remained only on paper in Leonardo’s codes, then built and realized. A transition from the imagination of the Renaissance genius to the concreteness of our days that once again attests to Leonardo’s farsightedness, which from today we are putting on display with a proposal designed for family tourism, suitable also for children, who will be able to touch the wonder of Leonardo’s works with their own hands.”
