Gregory Crewdson's photos on display at the Gallerie d'Italia in Turin, Italy.

From October 12, 2022 to January 22, 2023 at the Gallerie d'Italia in Turin, Intesa Sanpaolo opens to the public 'Gregory Crewdson. Eveningside,' the world premiere of the new series of photographs by the internationally renowned American photographer Gregory Crewdson.

The Gallerie d’Italia in Turin, headquarters of Intesa San Paolo, is hosting the exhibition Gregory Crewdson. Eveningside, curated by Jean-Charles Vergn, a world premiere that brings together the new series of photographs of the same title, Eveningside (2021-2022) by the internationally renowned photographer Gregory Crewdson (Brooklyn, New York, 1962).

Crewdson’s Eveningside images, commissioned in part by Intesa Sanpaolo, were conceived by the artist as the final act in a trilogy spanning ten years of work. The exhibition is a survey of this trilogy, beginning with Cathedral of the Pines (2012-2014) and An Eclipse of Moths (2018-2019), alongside Crewdson’s earlier minimalist shots titled Fireflies ( 1996). In addition, the state-of-the-art media room adjacent to the exhibition inside the museum will screen Making Eveningside, a behind-the-scenes video with original music by James Murphy of LCD Soundsystem, and Stuart Bogie, American multi-instrumentalist-composer.

In stark contrast to the haunted, lonely and remote forests of Cathedral of the Pines and the vast, desolate post-industrial landscapes of An Eclipse of Moths, in the Eveningside series Crewdson explores moments of contemplation within the confines of everyday life, in workplaces and adjacent spaces. The figures that populate the shots are gaunt and often seen through storefronts, in the reflection of a mirror, or positioned beneath the mundane proscenium of daily routine: railroad bridges, doorways, porches, the canopy of an ATM, a dairy, a local market, or a hardware store. By bringing his vantage point closer to the figures and using a more or less intense combination of light and shadow, special effects such as fog, rain, smoke and mist, and, for the first time, his now ubiquitous full lighting and production team in a monochromatic palette, the artist recreates a rich gothic atmosphere, evocative of film noir and classic cinema, but with the capabilities and clarity of the most current technology available in digital photography. Eveningside consists of 87.6 x 116.8 cm digital pigment prints. Each series in the trilogy represents essential stages in Crewdson’s artistic journey and creative evolution over the past decade, with themes ranging from the intimate and personal, to existential and expansive visions of the world, to reflections on his deep respect and admiration for the history of photography, painting, film, and other mediums, all reinvented to tell his stories.

Made in isolation by the artist in 1996, with two cameras on black-and-white analog film, the images in Fireflies offer in their simplicity a connective tissue and counterpoint.

The catalog in Italian, French and English editions is produced by Edizioni Gallerie d’Italia | Skira.

The exhibition will also be accompanied by a calendar of free public talks, the #INSIDE program featuring talks with distinguished guests and special events, scheduled on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. to accompany the current exhibitions.

Kicking off the series of events will be a talk scheduled for Oct. 12 featuring Gregory Crewdson and Jean Charles Vergne moderated by Alessia Glaviano, Head of Global PhotoVogue and Director of PhotoVogue Festival.

The Turin museum, along with those in Milan, Naples and Vicenza, is part of Intesa Sanpaolo’s Gallerie d’Italia museum project, led by Michele Coppola - Executive Director Art, Culture and Historical Assets of the Bank.

Statements

"With the exhibition inaugurated today, Intesa Sanpaolo," comments Gian Maria Gros-Pietro, Chairman of Intesa Sanpaolo, “continues the brilliant path started with the opening of the Turin museum last May. Gregory Crewdson contemplates and restores life in its everydayness. Hosting exhibitions like Eveningside brings us back to the motivations behind Intesa Sanpaolo’s commitment to culture: the dissemination of values that unite art, people, and community. The Bank cultivates these values with the same determination with which it conceives its role towards the growth of the economy and society.”

“We welcome to the museum headquarters of Gallerie d’Italia in Turin,” says Intesa Sanpaolo Chairman Emeritus Giovanni Bazoli, “the work of renowned American photographer Gregory Crewdson, created between 2012 and 2022 in Berkshire County, Massachusetts. A few months after its opening, Palazzo Turinetti has established itself as a point of reference for Italian and international photography, thanks to the photographic projects commissioned by Intesa Sanpaolo, which mirror today’s times and allow the public to confront the themes of modernity, even in its most contradictory aspects. In this way, the activities of Gallerie d’Italia fully interpret Intesa Sanpaolo’s role and commitment to the country’s cultural and social growth.”
