From September 18, 2020, to March 28, 2021, Arte in Fabbrica, at the Gori Tessuti e Casa headquarters in Calenzano, presents Flavio Favelli’s solo exhibition, entitled Profondo Oro (Deep Gold).
Curated by Pietro Gaglianò, the exhibition will display unpublished site-specific works by the artist: from the large wall painting, which will be a permanent work, to installations and sculptures.
The title refers to thataspiration to luxury and material well-being that has characterized the Italian dream from the economic boom of the 1950s to more recent times, up to the artist’s own experience. The gold of the title alludes not to the preciousness of the metal, but to the coatings and patinas that disguise other, less noble materials, such as the varnishes of woods and alloys or shiny packaging. It is a gold that beyond the first layer has other depths, of a sociological, economic, cultural and political nature: a gold that through the declaration of only supposed luxury describes the hopes and deceptions of a complex society.
Profondo Oro is in line with the aesthetic research that characterizes the artist’s work, with its focus on the history of objects and materials that it investigates, deconstructs and combines into new forms. The color gold dominates the outdoor mural and emerges from there on the installations inside. The two large sculptures are composed of doors and mirror panels from cabinets and other discarded furniture from this furniture culture. The surface of the work is revealed to be painterly. The wood bears the mark of time and use, natural decay of materials, oxidation, reactions to liquid contact and other household accidents. The spaces leading to the large exhibition hall host other works, including a light installation made by assembling some neon signs.
