Giulio Romano returns to Mantua. In 2019, a major exhibition at Palazzo Ducale traces his career

From October 6, 2019 to January 6, 2020, the Ducal Palace in Mantua hosts the exhibition "Con nuova e stravagante maniera. Giulio Romano in Mantua.

2019 will be the year of Giulio Romano (real name Giulio Pippi, Rome, 1492 or 1499 - Mantua, 1546), the most famous of Raphael’s pupils, who found a second home in Mantua, the city of the Gonzagas: next year, in fact, the city of the three lakes will be the site (at the Ducal Palace) of a major exhibition dedicated precisely to Giulio Romano. It is in fact scheduled from October 6, 2019 to January 6, 2020, the exhibition "Con nuova e stravagante maniera. Giulio Romano in Mantua, which aims to illustrate the figure of the great Roman artist and his “new way” of making art, with particular reference to what he produced in Mantua.

The exhibition is the result of a collaboration between the Ducal Palace Museum Complex and the Louvre in Paris, and will see on display in Mantua a nucleus of seventy-two drawings arriving from the Département des Arts Grapiques of the Musée du Louvre, which will lend them on loan for the first time: the sheets will be instrumental in tracing, in a comprehensive way, Giulio Romano’s entire career, from his beginnings in Rome in the Urbino style to his apotheosis in Mantua, highlighting the versatility of his interests. Not only that: there will also be paintings, prints, majolica and additional drawings from various Italian and international museums (including the Albertina in Vienna, the Victoria & Albert Museum in London, the Royal Collection at Windsor Castle). What’s more, Giulio Romano’s environments and objects will be reconstructed through three-dimensional technologies.

There will be three sections that will make up the exhibition. The first, entitled Giulio’s Sign, will be set up on the first floor of the Castello di San Giorgio and will analyze Giulio’s graphic production as planner, designer, painter, architect and urban planner, presenting his fundamental contribution to the renewal of Mannerist language. The second, Al modo di Giulio, will occupy the rooms of Corte Nuova and theAppartamento di Troia (the latter frescoed by Giulio Romano himself along with his workshop), suggesting a direct dialogue between the artist’s drawings and the decoration. Finally, the third and last section, Alla maniera di Giulio, will be set up in the Appartamento della Rustica and will delve into the Giulio Romano architect as well as the legacy of the great artist, exhibiting works by his pupils and disciples.

The exhibition will close in the Appartamento della Rustica with Alla maniera di Giulio, in which the theme of Giulio Romano the architect will be explored in depth on the one hand and his legacy on the other, with works by his pupils and disciples.
