From July 17, 2024 to November 18, 2024,Orio al Serio Airport on the outskirts of Bergamo will host a new exhibition project created by theCarrara Academy in collaboration with Società per l’Aeroporto Civile di Bergamo-Orio al Serio (SACBO). Travelers will have the opportunity to admire eleven graphic works by Giovanni Fattori (Livorno, 1825 - Florence, 1908) in the spaces of the HelloSky Lounge, eleven works that transform the airport into an art gallery, as part of the exhibition entitled Giovanni Fattori in Black and White.
The initiative confirms the airport’s intention to position itself as an international art venue, where the works on display not only beautify the space but also invite visitors to continue their cultural journey in the halls of the Accademia Carrara. The eleven engravings by Fattori(read an in-depth look at Fattori’s etching art here), ranging from portraits to genre scenes, offer travelers a fascinating immersion into the stories, people and places of rural and military life of the time.
Giovanni Fattori, breaking away from rigid academic forms, found inspiration in the humblest aspects of everyday life. The medium of engraving, with its ability to offer essential iconographies and without the use of color, succeeds in rendering poetic images that evoke life in the fields and a return to nature, conveying an almost religious feeling.
This exhibition marks a renewed synergy between the Carrara Academy and SACBO, continuing the collaboration started with the Vette di Luce project during Bergamo Brescia Capital of Culture 2023. The presence of Fattori’s works at the airport not only represents a key junction for those arriving in the city, but also invites travelers to explore the wonders kept by the Carrara Academy.
“The collaboration with SACBO,” says Martina Bagnoli, director of the Accademia Carrara, “offers Accademia Carrara a showcase in an unexpected place that we hope will intrigue those who don’t already know us. At the same time, anxious travelers can find a moment of peace and tranquility in the contemplation of fascinating works.”
“Milan Bergamo Airport,” says Giovanni Sanga, president of SACBO, “has long chosen to open its doors to art and offer guests of the HelloSky Lounge some of the precious treasures of Accademia Carrara. A shared art project, which is developed in a place of transit and becomes a calling card that adds to the magnificent skyline of the city of Bergamo visible from the air terminal. The display of Giovanni Fattori’s graphic works not only enriches the time passengers stop in the HelloSky Lounge, but is also an invitation to visit the Museum’s pictorial itineraries.”
