Giorgio Morandi stars in exhibition at Florence's Museo Novecento

The Museo Novecento in Florence, from March 15 to June 27, 2019, is hosting 'Exit Morandi,' a monographic exhibition dedicated to Giorgio Morandi.

On view at the Museo Novecento in Florence from March 15 to June 27, 2019 is Exit Morandi, an exhibition dedicated to Giorgio Morandi (Bologna, 1890 - 1964). The exhibition, curated by Maria Cristina Bandera and Sergio Risaliti, is in collaboration with the Roberto Longhi Foundation and Villa Brandi and features loans from the National Gallery of Modern and Contemporary Art in Rome, Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena and significant private collections.

The exhibition originates from four important paintings kept at the Museo Novecento that belonged to the collector Alberto Della Ragione, including a watercolor with a rare female figure bearing the punctual date “April 11, 918,” a small masterpiece on paper that reveals the artist’s extraordinary ability to keep up to date with the avant-garde and his personal figurative synthesis, carried out in an already essential and unconventional language. Morandi’s greatness was immediately evident to Roberto Longhi, who would never interrupt his human and intellectual confrontation with the artist. The two, while dating for decades, would always call each other “lei” in their correspondence exchanges; an affinity between an art historian and a painter that began in late 1934, on the occasion of the lecture given by Longhi as the new holder of the chair of Art History at theUniversity of Bologna. In “a packed lecture hall,” Longhi concluded his enlightened review of Moments in Bolognese Painting by speaking in these terms about Morandi: "And I end up finding it not entirely accidental that, one of the best living painters inItaly, Giorgio Morandi, even today, while navigating among the most perilous shoals of modern painting, has, however, always known how to direct his journey with a meditated slowness, with an affectionate studiousness, to seem those of a newly set out." A journey of which Cesare Brandi, Francesco Arcangeli and Carlo Ludovico Ragghianti were also vigorous interpreters, that is, the cardinal points of twentieth-century criticism concerning the art of the Bolognese master. Hence the basis of a special exhibition project, which brings together works that belonged to or gravitated in the orbit of the four illustrious art historians, to seal, in the passage of time and the changing of the seasons, the fidelity to Morandi’s silent and steadfast painting.

The exhibition will feature still lifes, landscapes, flowers and a series of etchings, an artistic expression in which Morandi was one of the greatest representatives of his years and which earned him the international prize at the São Paulo Biennale in Brazil in 1953.
