At the Musée Maillol in Paris, an exhibition is on view until Jan. 20, 2019, that aims to provide a reinterpretation of Alberto Giacometti ’s works by bringing them into dialogue with the great classical sculptors and contemporaries to his time.
"Giacometti. Entre tradition et avant-garde," this is the title of the exhibition dedicated to the Swiss artist and realized in collaboration with the Giacometti Foundation in Paris, features more than fifty sculptures, all belonging to the Foundation, set against about twenty-five works by other artists, such as Rodin, Bourdelle, Maillol, Despiau, Brancusi, Laurens, Lipchitz, Zadkine, Csaky and Richier.
Indeed, the chronologically and thematically subdivided exhibition highlights the relationships these artists had with Giacometti, taking into account theevolution in Giacometti’sstyle: from his youthful works influenced by classical modernity to works influenced by the Parisian avant-garde before 1925, to his attraction to the abstract and subsequent and definitive return to figurative art.
Among his masterpieces on display are Femme qui marche (1932), La Clairière (1950), Femme de Venise III (1956), andHomme qui marche II (1960).
The exhibition is enhanced by a selection of graphic works, lithographs and photographs, and archival documents.
