Georg Baselitz stars in 2018 major exhibition in Basel

Fondation Beyeler Basel ’s 2018 opens with a major exhibition dedicated to Georg Baselitz (real name Hans-Georg Rem, Deutschbaselitz - Kamenz, 1938) celebrating the 80th birthday of the great German painter, one of the leading names in contemporary art: to mark the event, Fondation Beyeler has come up with a retrospective that brings together several of Baselitz’s paintings and sculptures made over a span of sixty years. Several are also unseen.

“Baselitz,” reads the presentation of the exhibition, 2is among the few contemporary artists whose roots lie in the history of European and American painting. He is considered the inventor of a figurative language that draws on a rich repertoire of iconographic and stylistic elements which, transposed into his creations, nevertheless acquire contradictory and ambivalent valences. Baselitz’s cosmos of images presents itself as a cabinet of mirrors, in which his own, remembered or invented images merge with art-historical models to form new compositions."

The exhibits on display in Basel are intended to account for so much richness: starting with works from the 1960s, such as Heroes and Fractures, there will be space for the upside-down figures of the 1970s and 1980s, there will be the sculpture that Baselitz exhibited at the 1980 Venice Biennale, and works from the Remix series will also be present in addition to more recent creations. In all, 80 paintings and 10 sculptures made between 1959 and 2017.

The exhibition opens Jan. 21, 2018, runs through April 29, and is a collaboration between the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden in Washington, DC (where it will later move to with a different layout).
