In 2025, the National Gallery of Liguria at Palazzo Spinola is preparing for a major renovation phase. Starting March 4, work to overhaul the technical facilities will necessitate the closure of the museum’s third and fourth floors until the end of the summer. An intervention that, while involving partial access to the exhibition spaces, will not deprive the public of the works usually displayed in the affected rooms: in fact, these masterpieces will be the protagonists of a major exhibition at the Reggia di Venaria.
From April 10 to September 7, 2025, the famous Savoy complex will host Magnificent Collections - Art and Power in the Genoa of the Doges, an exhibition itinerary that will give new visibility to the works of the National Gallery of Liguria. The initiative stems from an enhancement agreement between the National Museums of Genoa and the Consortium of the Royal Residences of Savoy and will offer the public a unique opportunity to admire works that tell the story of the great artistic season of the Republic of Genoa. Not only that: the itinerary will be enriched by loans from the historical collections of the Royal Palace and Palazzo Spinola itself, reconstructing a context of extraordinary relevance for the history of Italian and European art.
Despite the work, Palazzo Spinola will never close completely. Visitors will be able to access the palace’s two historic floors, which will be the focus of a rediscovery and expansion operation. Among the main novelties is the opening of the ancient kitchens, scheduled for the end of March. An intervention that restores to public use a room that has been used until now as a storage room and that will make it possible to admire an important nucleus of ceramics in an evocative setting.
Other significant changes will affect the mezzanine, where a new layout will be created for three rooms dedicated to paintings on wood. This space will house works of great historical and artistic value, including the first acquisitions of the National Gallery of Liguria and a series of portraits signed by masters such as Tintoretto and Corcos. An itinerary that, through portraits, will tell the story of the evolution of Genoese society and artistic taste between the Renaissance and the 19th century. The rearrangement of the historical floors will also ensure the visibility of some of the museum’s most celebrated masterpieces. Prominent among them is Antonello da Messina’sEcce Homo, a work of extraordinary expressive intensity that will remain accessible throughout the period of the work.
