Genoa, two hardly visible paintings by Jan Roos and Grechetto compared

In Genoa, the Goldfinch Fine Arts gallery offers an interesting comparison by exhibiting together two animal-themed paintings by Jan Roos and Grechetto, two great artists of the 17th century in Genoa.

Two important seventeenth-century artists face off in Genoa with two hard-to-access paintings with an animalier theme. The Goldfinch Fine Arts gallery, at its headquarters on Via Garibaldi in the heart of the historic center of the Ligurian capital, is exhibiting together The Entrance of the Animals into the Ark by Giovanni Benedetto Castiglione known as Il Grechetto (Genoa, 1609 - Mantua, 1664), and Orpheus Enchanting the Animals by Jan Roos (Antwerp, 1591 - Genoa, 1638) starting Nov. 24. The two works can be seen every Friday and Saturday at the Goldfinch venue.

Artists who grew up within distant cultural horizons, belonging to different generations but found themselves artistically coexisting in the same city, Genoa, Grechetto and Jan Roos wrote a highly original page in the history of Genoese art. The role of the Flemish painter in the art of his time is still mostly misunderstood today, partly because of the fragmentary knowledge of his work. But a clue to his importance is given, in addition to the quality of his best works, precisely by the admiration brought to his work by Grechetto, one of the greatest Genoese painters of the century.

An opportunity, then, to see two great painters of 17th-century Genoa measure themselves against similar themes, where animals are the great protagonists. The exhibition is open until Dec. 23, 2023, with hours 10 a.m.-1 p.m. and 2-6 p.m. Information is available by calling 010 8602250.
