Genoa, Chiossone Museum reopens after two years with an exhibition on the role of water in Japan

The Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art in Genoa reopens to the public after nearly two years of construction with an exhibition on Kokusai's Great Wave and the importance of water in Japanese culture.

From June 24 to September 23, 2023, the Edoardo Chiossone Museum of Oriental Art in Genoa will host the exhibition The Great Wave. The Importance of Water in Japanese Culture, on the occasion of the grand finale of Ocean Race.

Closed since September 2021, the museum is now being returned to the public in its renovated form, while retaining the iconic charm of its architectural structure. Upgrades, carried out with support from the Compagnia di San Paolo Foundation, have allowed the museum’s large rooftop terrace to be restored and used for outdoor events.

The Chiossone Museum boasts Italy’s largest and most important collection of Japanese art, collected by Genoese artist and engraver Edoardo Chiossone during his long period living in Japan in the late 19th century. In an elevated position facing the sea within the historic Villetta Di Negro park, the museum venue is surrounded by greenery and included in the scenic and botanical trails. Chiossone’s was the first collection of Italian oriental art to be opened to the public, in 1905, in its original location at the Ligustica Academy of Fine Arts, while since 1971 it has been displayed in the current building, specially designed by Genoese architect Mario Labò in the 1950s.

The exhibition will be opened to the public on Friday, June 23, with an extraordinary evening opening, after being closed for nearly two years for structural and plant upgrades. Starting at 8 p.m. and ending at 10:30 p.m., the museum will be open with free access. The exhibition has received the patronage of the Consulate of Japan in Milan.
